Technical standard for review: lithium-ion batteries

by Boating Industry Association 23 Apr 2024 13:49 PDT

To ensure standards that support the fast-evolving technology used in the marine industry, with a particular focus on battery technology, the International Standards Organisation, ISO, has published a draft standard ISO/DIS 23625 Small Craft - Lithium-ion batteries.

This document provides requirements and recommendations for the selection and installation of lithium-ion batteries for boats, applicable batteries and to battery systems with a capacity greater than 600 Wh, installed on small craft for providing power for general electrical loads and/or to electric propulsion systems. It is primarily intended for manufacturers and battery installers.

The draft standard has been published to seek international industry feedback as to suitability of requirements and on publication will be referenced to various international regulations concerning small craft design and construction, including the EU RCD. It will also provide reference to support a level of compliance with regulatory requirements in Australia.

BIA members with an interest in reviewing ISO/DIS 23625 should contact Nik Parker at . Commenting on the draft closes on 14 June 2024.
