Flexiteek is proud to celebrate the one year milestone of Toolmaking apprentice, Riley, whose journey marks a powerful testament to the value of hands-on training, innovation, and investing in the next generation of engineering talent.

Twelve months ago, Riley joined Flexiteek at a pivotal time, coinciding with the launch of Flexiteek 3. As part of a four-year Machining Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship in partnership with Colchester Institute, Riley set out to develop his manufacturing and engineering skills in a real-world environment.

Now, after completing his first year, Riley has made impressive progress, becoming an integral part of Flexiteek's tool room team and contributing directly to the development and refinement of tooling for Flexiteek 3.

"My confidence has improved greatly in operating machinery and the 2D design systems compared to where I started." says Riley, Apprentice Toolmaker at Flexiteek.

Riley has not only completed his apprenticeship workbooks and passed health and safety assessments with flying colours, but he's also built an exceptional foundation in essential machining techniques. He is now confidently producing clamp rings on a lathe and duplicating key tools—critical operations that have directly supported in Flexiteek's innovation pipeline.

"Riley has progressed and learnt so much from when he started working for Flexiteek." adds Steve, Engineering & Product Development Manager at Flexiteek.

Apprenticeships: Shaping the Future of Skilled Trades

In an era of evolving manufacturing technologies, apprenticeships like Riley's are more relevant than ever. They offer a unique blend of academic learning and real-world experience, equipping young professionals with the confidence and technical skills needed to thrive.

"Apprenticeships are not just about training—they're a strategic investment in our future," said Adam Ramsden. "Riley has brought fresh thinking, energy, and an eagerness to learn that has already made a real difference in our business."

Partnership with Colchester Institute

Flexiteek's collaboration with Colchester Institute has been key to Riley's development. His first year of study covered essential modules, including engineering principles, environmental health and safety, and hands-on training with lathes and milling machines. This balanced approach ensures apprentices like Riley can immediately apply their skills in a practical, high-performance manufacturing environment.

Looking Ahead: What's Next for Riley?

As Riley enters his second year, he'll take on more complex challenges, including 2D CAD design, CNC milling, and engineering mathematics. He will also begin training in CNC programming and CAD/CAM systems, expanding his expertise into digital manufacturing—an essential step in preparing for the future of precision engineering.

"I am looking forward to bettering my skills in 2D design work for the tooling as well as the process to help to make a better product."

A Bright Future

Flexiteek is incredibly proud of Riley's achievements and excited about his continued journey. Apprenticeships like his not only empower individuals but also strengthen the wider industry by closing skills gaps and building sustainable talent pipelines.
