Eighteen students, along with six teachers and representatives from Local Learning and Employment Networks (LLENs), took part in the Campbellfield Boating Careers Immersion Day this week - an experience that opened eyes to the wide range of careers in the marine industry.

The day kicked off at Honda Marine's Training Facility in Somerton, where students were introduced to the latest marine engine technology. They were able to look inside, handle and learn about outboard engines, guided by Honda staff, before enjoying a hosted lunch at the Rider Training Facility.

In the afternoon, the group visited Whittley Marine in Campbellfield, one of Australia's most iconic boat manufacturers. Managing Director Neville Whittley gave an engaging presentation on the company's history and the craftsmanship behind their boats. Students toured the factory floor and witnessed the processes of modern boat building in action.

The impact was clear: students were engaged, asked thoughtful questions, and left with a much greater understanding of the industry. Excitingly, one student is already on the pathway to a marine mechanical apprenticeship, demonstrating the immediate value of these immersions in creating career opportunities.

Boating Careers Manager Dan Brown said the day was a strong example of industry and education working together:

"Immersion days like this are about connecting young people directly with employers. By seeing the technology, the facilities, and hearing the stories of people building and maintaining boats, students can really picture themselves in these careers!"

The Campbellfield Immersion is part of the wider Boating Careers Industry Immersion program, which continues across Victoria in Term 4 with visits planned in Eildon, Geelong, Dandenong, and Bairnsdale.
