Last week at the International BoatBuilders' Exhibition & Conference (IBEX) in Tampa, National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) President and CEO Frank Hugelmeyer opened the Industry Breakfast with a state of the industry address to a sold-out crowd of more than 950 marine industry professionals.

Hugelmeyer addressed the shifting economic and policy landscape, evolving consumer expectations, and the innovation opportunities ahead for recreational boating. "The future is ours to capture, but we must remain relevant, accessible and affordable," he said, emphasizing the importance of adaptation and collaboration as the industry navigates change.

The American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) has launched a new online course, Introduction to Boatyard Basics, designed to help newcomers build confidence and skills as they begin rewarding careers in the marine industry. Boatyards across the country offer a variety of opportunities for both experienced workers and those just entering the field. With an aging workforce, the industry is looking for new talent ready to learn, grow and build lasting careers in the trades. This course helps those hired for general-labor positions by providing a strong foundation for onboarding and orientation.

Sail America is pleased to announce this year's Annapolis Boat Show's "Best in Show" awards in different categories: Best booth display 200 square feet and under: Dometic Vacumax. Best booth display over 200 square feet: Ellebogen. Best booth display fewer than four boats: Best booth display with four boats or more: Lagoon. Best in show: Garmin. The awards were presented at the annual Industry Meeting on October 10 at the Annapolis Waterfront Hotel in Maryland, as part of the US Sailboat Show.

Catalina Yachts have announced that it is stopping production after current orders are filled. In a statement by company president Patrick Turner, he cites "short-term financial challenges" and indicates the Florida-based builder will return to production. Turner has released a statement mentioning "We have initiated a temporary production pause while we reorganize key areas of our operation." The dealer network remains available to assist with sales, service, and warranty matters.

The NMMA is now accepting nominations for the 2026 Alan J. Freedman Memorial Award, recognizing individuals who have made outstanding and lasting contributions to the marine accessories industry. Presented annually, the award honors those who demonstrate exceptional leadership, creativity, innovation, and personal motivation in advancing the industry. Eligible nominees may include accessory manufacturers, sales representatives, media members, dealers, distributors, or association staff.
