How smarter race management is changing sailing

For decades, yacht clubs have relied on a familiar formula to run races: mark boats, volunteer race committees, lengthy setup times, and a significant amount of manpower. The system has worked, but it has also become increasingly difficult to sustain.

Unlike traditional race marks, MarkSetBots do not require anchors or dedicated mark boats.

Each unit uses GPS-guided positioning and onboard electric propulsion to maintain its assigned location. Race officers can deploy, reposition, and manage marks remotely from a smartphone, tablet, committee vessel, or even from shore.

SailGP provides perhaps the clearest example of why robotic marks matter. With a strict broadcast schedule, race officials must be able to adjust course dimensions and orientation quickly as conditions change.
