A special milestone for Australian boatbuilding as Lightwave Yachts celebrates 30 years of locally designed and crafted cruising catamarans, marking the occasion by investing in new robotic technology to carry its Queensland-built boats into the future.

Founded on the Gold Coast in 1996 by shipwright Roger Overell, Lightwave has grown from humble beginnings into an internationally recognised Australian catamaran brand, with more than 100 custom-built vessels delivered over three decades.

As the business grew, Lightwave moved its boatbuilding operations to Coomera in 2003, with many of its catamarans fabricated from premises within what was then known as the Gold Coast Marine Centre, today The Boat Works.

Lightwave Yachts remains as Australia's one and only sailing catamaran manufacturer and The Boat Works is especially proud to share a long history with the Lightwave success story.

Robotics and advanced manufacturing

Now based in Yatala, Lightwave has recently installed new robotic and automated equipment to improve productivity and streamline its production processes, combining 30 years of hands-on boatbuilding craftsmanship with advanced manufacturing technology.

The investment positions Lightwave to continue building quality Australian catamarans for decades to come, and places it among a growing number of Gold Coast businesses championing advanced manufacturing across the marine, defence, aerospace and construction sectors.

Lightwave catamarans have long been a familiar sight at The Boat Works, with many owners returning year after year for annual servicing, maintenance, upgrades and refit projects.

As a long-standing part of the Lightwave journey, The Boat Works continues to support its owners with dedicated multihull haul-out options, including our 45-tonne hydraulic Sealift and 100-tonne variable-width Travelift.

Across our 55-acre marine precinct, owners have access to more than 1,000 skilled marine professionals, extensive in-water servicing facilities, hardstand areas and purpose-built refit sheds with ample clearance to accommodate vessels with masts in place.

From routine maintenance to major refits, The Boat Works remains a one-stop destination for Lightwave owners and the wider multihull community.

Congratulations to Roger and Louise, the entire Lightwave Yachts team and the loyal Lightwave owner community on 30 years of Australian boatbuilding excellence and an exciting new chapter in Queensland manufacturing.

The Boat Works is proud to have shared part of the journey.
