DAME R&D Excellence in Adversity Award call for entries - photo © METSTRADE

Dear Recipient Name

This year, METSTRADE would have proudly celebrated the 30th continuous running of the DAME (Design at METSTRADE) Awards. The reputation of the DAME Awards has been built over decades upon a rigorous process conducted by an international jury of renowned reputation, who meet in Amsterdam to make their final assessments.

Given the many logistical and safety challenges posed by the pandemic, the decision has been taken to defer the 30th event to 2021 and assess a field of entries new to market between 1 September 2019 and 16 November 2021 at that time. But entries are now open for a special one-off DAME competition to be awarded at the virtual METSTRADE Connect event on 10 December 2020. The DAME R&D Excellence in Adversity Award will celebrate the efforts of global equipment manufacturers that have kept design at the forefront of their development efforts during the pandemic challenges of 2020.

Further evidence of the need to continue to communicate with industry members is reflected in the Marine Industries Association's continued use of the virtual classroom. The ongoing social restrictions have halted face-to-face training in the short term across much of the world. In response the MIA developed and conducted the first ever Online Intermediate Marina Management (IMM) course with 17 participants in July. Due to the success of the course the Global Marina Institute (GMI) has endorsed the delivery of a second online IMM in November 2020. The timing will allow marina industry personnel from across the regions from Europe, the Middle East and Asia to undertake the course from their work desks. Participation will ensure that management and operational skills are being enhanced and careers are moving forward.

And as the world looks for ways of reducing carbon emissions, zero emission racing project 'OceansLab' announces the launch of hydrogen fuel cell solutions to accelerate maritime decarbonisation through clean-tech spin-off company, Genevos. The Hydrogen Power Module (HPM) is a marinised plug-and-play solution to achieving zero emissions power for vessels. Water is the only by-product of the HPM, which uses a high-efficiency fuel cell to create electricity through the reaction of hydrogen sourced from renewable energy. Free from toxic greenhouse gases, clean hydrogen has been named by the International Transport Forum as an important fuel for decarbonising maritime trade. What's more, hydrogen created from renewables has been forecast to undercut all other forms of marine fuel by 2030.
