Containers lost at sea pose a special problem for coastal leisure craft as they are difficult to see and cause immense damage if they connect with a yacht or powerboat. Last week a ship travelling from Taiwan to Port Botany lost no less than 83 of the 40 foot versions, overboard in rough seas.
Roads and Maritime Executive Director Angus Mitchell said the containers are believed to have fallen overboard from YM Efficiency about 30 kilometres off the NSW Central Coast in Commonwealth waters. Two containers have been sighted about 100 metres offshore from Fingal Head and Boondelbah Island near Port Stephens.
Recovery and removal of these containers is the responsibility of the shipping vessel operator. Roads and Maritime is asking members of the public to be on the lookout for these 40 foot containers at sea and on shore. The ship was allowed to enter the port on Wednesday this week.
On a lighter note John Curnow reports on the Riviera presentation at Sanctuary Cove, a VIP affair with limited guest numbers, deliberately staged to ensure that there's more to Riviera ownership than a Riviera ownership!
As the aftermath of the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show subsides a reminder that the shows continue with South Australia's most comprehensive recreational marine exhibition opening next week at the Adelaide Showground. From prestige watercraft, to practical fishing vessels, tinnies and kayaks, the Adelaide Boat Show is a fun family day out, representing an exciting weekend for everyone who loves boating on the fabulous waterways and coastal areas in this great part of Australia.
Multihulls continue to prove popular boating choices and Fountaine Pajot's latest sailing catamaran, the Astréa 42, has won a major international marine award being voted "Multihull of the Year" by French Voile magazine and Le Monde du Multicoque. The catamaran has burst onto the world stage since its April launch at the Grand La Motte boat show in France earning critical acclaim by industry professionals and setting new sales records. Multihull Solutions are the Australian distributors.
Fishing is also making use of beamy multihull configurations and John Curnow describes his experience testing the Aquilla 36 imported by Multihull Central. John writes "The award winning Aquila 36 has been on our radar since we tested it, which you can see in our piece The Great Entertainer. Like many, we have subsequently awaited the opportunity to look over the fishing version, which is one of several variants you can have to suit your needs. Since the Aquila 36 was launched some 16 months ago, there have been 45 units sold to date, which is pretty awesome."
The industry is made up of many small businesses and it's always good to hear of a local company scoring a lucrative contract. 316 Fastening Group did just that recently and have announced that Grand Banks has chosen their stainless steel Rub Rail to be fitted to Grand Banks and Palm Beach Motor Yachts. The beautiful motor yachts are known for their sleek lines and the polished Rub Rail is the perfect addition to these high quality boats.
