Royal Cape Yacht Club and Iate Clube do Rio de Janeiro are delighted to announce the first official entry for the Cape 2 Rio Race 2023.

"Black Pearl" a new IRC optimised water ballasted Botin56 has just been launched and will participate in the 2023 edition of the race. This will be the second time that a "Black Pearl" and its crew, which comprises a fair number of South Africans, will be participating in the Cape 2 Rio Race. In the 2017 edition the team won overall Handicap honours and lifted the South Atlantic Race Trophy.

The Black Pearl project manager and navigator, Marc Lagesse, recalled the fond memories the team have of this crossing and expressed their appreciation of the early announcement of the Cape2Rio 2023. This has been helpful in determining their future schedule.

The new Black Pearl has just completed sea trials in Europe and is currently moored in Lanzarote, Canary Islands awaiting the start of the annual RORC Transatlantic Race scheduled to commence on 9 January 2021. This event marks the commencement of the Caribbean Sailing Circuit that includes the RORC Caribbean 600 starting 22 February 2021. These recent pictures of the boat undergoing sea trials are courtesy of Julian Luca.

We wish them well for all the events ahead and look forward to welcoming them again in Cape Town in 2023.

The Cape2Rio Race 2023 will commence 2 January 2023, please contact . and keep up to date with developments on website and social media feeds.
