Is it a motoryacht? Is it a sailing yacht? No, it's an all-new category of superyacht with fully automated wings.
The latest episode in the Feadship Unveils series of videos on our YouTube channel features an environmentally responsible world traveller dreamed up with the designers at Merveille Yachting in France.
The Eco-Explorer features a mast system with wings that can be propelled at twice the strength of a traditional rig. Automatic operation by computers helps control heeling, a key downside of sailing boats for some. On-board power consumption is exceptionally low thanks to a lightweight structural frame, with energy regenerated via underwater/wind turbines and solar panelling. Smart airflow solutions using tubular structures reduce air conditioning energy needs by a third.
Other highlights of this striking Eco-Explorer include a super-spacious interior and balmy beach club aft featuring a giant pool. With a hull shape based on racing boats, the yacht has a top speed of 25 knots and three times the range of an equivalent motoryacht between 60 and 100 metres.
