Yanmar unveils advanced SCR system achieving 90% NOx emissions reduction

YANMAR Marine International has introduced its innovative Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system, designed to significantly cut NOx emissions from commercial vessels with engines exceeding 130 kW in Emission Control Areas (ECAs).

This launch underscores YANMAR's dedication to advancing sustainable and eco-friendly propulsion technologies.

YANMAR's SCR system meets the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Tier III emission standards which apply to marine diesel engines operating in ECAs, with the system providing a 60-90% reduction of NOx, depending on loading conditions and temperature.

The system can also be fitted to larger leisure vessels (larger than 24 metres) for those seeking to be more sustainable, such as a J Class sailing yacht that was recently fitted with the YANMAR SCR system. This system is not intended for use in the USA.

The advanced emissions control system, paired with the unique common rail technology used in YANMAR's combustion engines, uses a number of sensors to accurately measure temperature and NOx before it enters the catalyst. An ECU calculates the correct volume of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), also known as AdBlue which needs to be injected, which then binds with the NOx, reducing emissions down to near-zero levels. The system pairs with YANMAR's 6LY series of engines, between 400-440HP.

A key design feature of the YANMAR SCR system is its size and weight, being much smaller than other SCR systems on the market and weighing only 86KG. This makes it significantly easier to retrofit.

Bas Eerden, Global Sales Manager at YANMAR Marine International, said: "What we have created with this SCR system is an easier and simpler way to significantly reduce NOx emissions. The system's uses go beyond adhering to regulations and utilizes the latest technology to make a very significant reduction in emissions, which is the aim of all our solutions. This is in line with the YANMAR Green Challenge initiative to reduce emissions globally."

For colder regions with the Emission Control Areas, such as the Nordics and Baltics, YANMAR offers an optional heater kit for the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) to remain at a certain temperature to prevent crystallization which occurs at -13°C.
