After several active months that saw many harbors experience so-called "sunny day" flooding events, most of the country will experience a reprieve this month.
Flooding is not likely in any of the 213 harbors for which NOAA offers tidal predictions, though it is possible even without the impact of storm-driven waves or surge in several significant harbors.
Boston and both Portland and Bar Harbor, Maine, may see flooding on and around the full moon, on February 1, and the new moon, on February 17. On the Gulf Coast, flooding is possible only at Eagle Point, in Galveston Bay, on the 1st and 17th. The West Coast and Hawaiian Islands will see possible flooding on those same days in major ports such as Seattle, San Diego, and the harbors of Kahului and Hilo, among others.
Low-lying areas may flood during these events, and the impacts of these higher water levels may be exacerbated if they coincide with storms or strong winds.
Note that while NOAA only makes these flooding predictions for harbors with National Ocean Service water level stations, other locations along the coast may experience similar high-water events during these time periods.
- February 1 - Full Moon
- February 17 - New Moon
