The African Boating Conference (ABC), held in Cape Town on 20-21 October, has reinforced its growing importance as a platform for Southern Africa's marine industry, attracting over 232 registrations, 12 exhibitors and significant support from leading local and international marine businesses.

Hosted by Superyacht Cape Town, the two-day event brought together boatbuilders, marine suppliers, superyacht professionals, government representatives and international industry leaders to explore opportunities for investment, collaboration and economic growth.

Under the theme Boating as a Catalyst for Economic Growth, the conference delivered a highly relevant programme addressing global trade pressures, boatbuilding, marine infrastructure, superyacht tourism, charter development and innovation.

International speakers Erwin Bamps, CEO of Gulf Craft, and Paris Baloumis of Oceanco brought valuable global perspectives on market development, strategic partnerships and the investment needed to strengthen Africa's international competitiveness.

The conference also received strong government support, with Western Cape Premier Alan Winde welcoming delegates and Alderman James Vos, representing Invest Cape Town, highlighting the economic importance of South Africa's marine sector.

A defining feature of the event was the exceptional level of engagement and collaboration among delegates, with discussions extending beyond the formal programme into networking opportunities and potential business partnerships.

Conference Director Veda Pretorius said the response demonstrated the value of bringing the industry together.

"What stood out for me was the genuine willingness among delegates to connect, share ideas and explore opportunities to work together. There is enormous expertise and capability within the Southern African marine industry, but greater collaboration is essential if we are to realise its full potential.

While the 232 registrations represent a conservative figure, with additional delegates attending on the day, the level of participation and support from our exhibitors and sponsors was extremely encouraging. Ultimately, however, the success of the conference is measured not simply by attendance, but by the quality of the conversations, the connections made and the partnerships that emerge. That is where the real long-term value lies."

The event attracted substantial corporate backing, with Seascape Marine Services, Pesto Sea Group South Africa, Dan-Bunkering and FFS as Premier Partners, alongside support from international brands including Gulf Craft, Ajax Systems, Flexiteek, and AkzoNobel who were among the many organisations contributing to its success.

Pretorius said the conference's growing industry and international support reinforced its long-term ambitions.

"We want the African Boating Conference to become an important date on the international marine calendar, one that attracts serious industry participation and contributes to a stronger, more connected and internationally competitive African marine sector."

With strong participation, an internationally relevant programme and growing industry support, the African Boating Conference is establishing itself as an important meeting point for those shaping the future of Southern Africa's marine economy.
